Once, a youthful dragon decided to go on a great journey. He bid farewell to his clan and trekked the world, passing through badlands and deserts, by coasts and through jungles. All the while he met other clans that gave him rest for the night, and in exchange he regaled them with tales of the world.
As he passed through a coniferous forest one night, he came upon a clan that offered him shelter. He accepted this graciously and joined them in feasting. While there he met a beautiful dragoness and fell in love, but they were star crossed indeed, as he was a traveller and her father was the leader, and he would give her to no one.
The two were so deeply stricken that they hatched upon a cunning plan of escape, and while the others slept they snuck away into the night. The following morning, the sire of the dragoness awakened and was stunned to find her missing. The traveller was gone too, so he assumed that they eloped. Infuriated, he summoned a great search to be held for them, but in the end the pair was quick and eluded even the leaderwyrm’s best efforts.
Angry, the leader spat curses upon them, but as the memories of his daughter returned, his anger softened and he placed a gentle yet furious curse upon them both: the youth could never be parted from his daughter.
After a year of travels, both were content. The traveller showed his mate the world, and she was glad, but on the day after the year of their meeting, the dragoness fell sick with an unknown ailment. The traveller went to all the clans, asking them for aid, but none could treat her. As he was searching for aid, the dragoness slipped away. When he returned he was heartbroken at her passing, and sobbed in anguish for days.
The curse had fallen upon him, and his love for her began to transform him. The youth became a great, tall tree that covered her and protected her. Bristles formed all around him in protection, and the tree became named after him: Pine.
Legends say that every dawn morning, one can see a spiny, wingless spirit-dragon near the magical pine, still mourning for his beloved.
